Kalumburu is Western Autralia's most northern community, and administered by the Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation. Entry permit apply at $40 for 7 days. You can get a permit on arrival at the Corporation Visitor Ctr.
Camping permitted at The Mission in town, McGowan Island (not really an island) and Honey Moon Beach. They all charge $15/day per adult. McGowan has clean toilets and shower's shade area's and lawn. Honey Moon has still not been repaired after a cyclone ripped it apart several years ago, the water was put back into service whislt we were there. We had a great camp right on the beach, but just far enough away from the Croc's!
Stat's on how we got there covered in our "Bushabout Blog"
Now you know the lay of the land, you can check out your maps! It's very remote. During the
wet season 6 months or so, all supplies come in by barge from Darwin. Fuel (Diesel ) was $2.85/ltr. The store in town was very well stocked and reasonably priced for most items.
Magic morning, and fly fish the beach, keeping a wary eye out for dark shape in the water!
The wind usually got up late morning, thus limiting the fly fishing.
Sue's fish on fly!
These's guy's / gal's took no notice of us, if only we had a big enough landing net!
It's a catch and eat all you want whilst camping on the reserve, but no fish or oysters to be taken with you when you leave - no one check's BUT_____
So we duly ate every thing we caught & kept.
Primed this guy with dead fish!
Josie has the fishing charter, and Matty looks after the camp at Honey Moon.
Yes, it was back breaking work but worth it for the size of oyster, super fresh and a couple of dozen slid down very well thank you.
Now these lasses got stranded. They took up with a guy who had advertised for folks to share the cost of travelling etc. He was going here, there, and every where, but when it came time to travel here, there, and every where he did not want to go. So kicked the girls out some where up the Gibb River Road. Jossie picked them up, so they ended up in Kalumburu. They headed off next day via the mail plane to Kunnarra $160 each and good deal considering.
All in all it was neat to get up into this area and an adventure to get there (see bushabout) but a far as the fishing goes , over rated unless you go miles out to sea to the reefs and island.
Oh well, we can say 'BEEN THERE, DONE THAT'
